Νέα ελληνική γλώσσα

Η νέα ελληνική ή νεοελληνική γλώσσα (ιστορικά γνωστή και ως Ρωμαίικα) αναφέρεται στις διάφορες γλωσσικές ποικιλίες των Ελληνικών που ομιλούνται στην σύγχρονη εποχή. Η έναρξη της γλωσσικής περιόδου της Νέας Ελληνικής τοποθετείται, συμβολικά κυρίως, μετά την άλωση της Κωνσταντινούπολης το 1453, παρόλο που πολλά ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά της Νέας Ελληνικής είχαν κάνει την εμφάνιση τους αιώνες πριν – από τον 3ο αιώνα π.Χ. έως τον 10ο αιώνα[1]. Κατά την περίοδο της Νέας Ελληνικής, η γλώσσα βρισκόταν σε μία κατάσταση διγλωσσίας, καθώς τοπικές διάλεκτοι συνυπήρχαν με τις επίσημες αρχαϊκές μορφές της γλώσσας. H Νεοελληνική άρχισε να παίρνει την ακριβή σημερινή της μορφή στα τέλη του 17ου αιώνα.
Τα Ελληνικά αποτελούν ανεξάρτητο κλάδο των Ινδοευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών. Όλες οι υπάρχουσες μορφές της Νεοελληνικής, εκτός από την Τσακωνική διάλεκτο, είναι απόγονοι της Ελληνιστικής Κοινής της ύστερης αρχαιότητας. Έτσι, μπορεί αναμφίβολα να θεωρηθεί απόγονος της Αττικής διαλέκτου, η οποία ομιλούνταν στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Αθήνας κατά την κλασσική εποχή. Η Τσακωνική διάλεκτος, μία απομονωμένη διάλεκτος που ομιλείται πλέον από μία μικρή ομάδα στην περιοχή της Πελοποννήσου, προήλθε από τη Δωρική διάλεκτο.
